Walking in the Spirit Devotional

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 9 - WALKING IN THE SPIRIT

MEMORY VERSE: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 8:1-2, 10-14

INTRODUCTION

God planned that each one of His children would live their lives empowered by the Holy Spirit. For this reason, the coming of the Holy Spirit was promised by God in Acts 2:38-39.To live the Spirit-empowered life, we must walk daily in the Spirit and not in the lust of the flesh. This is the only way to live a life that is acceptable and pleasing to God. Life in Christ Jesus is possible only by the law of the Spirit of life, which makes us free from the law of sin and death.

OUTLINES

  1. NO MORE CONDEMNATION
  2. LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

    1. NO MORE CONDEMNATION

For all those who are in Christ Jesus, there is no more condemnation Romans 8:1-2. This is because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus makes everyone who trusts Him for their salvation free from the condemnation of the law of the sin and death. These categories of believers “walk daily” according to the dictates of the Holy Spirit. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus goes beyond the law of sin and death and makes it possible to live a life that is pleasing to God in every day. All who live like this live beyond the standards required by the law, and so there is no more condemnation.

The law of Moses is what brings the knowledge of sin and holds every sinner under condemnation Romans 6:23. Those who live under this law struggle to obey it and continue to come short of the glory of God. The Bible says that no one will be justified by the deeds of the law Romans 3:20. Those who are in Christ Jesus are free from condemnation of the law of sin and death Romans 8:1. Everyone living according to the flesh are like those on “death row” - condemned to death because of sin. Jesus said in John 3:18b that he who does not believe in Christ Jesus is condemned already.

    2. LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence give us life in Christ Romans 8:10. When Christ comes into A new life in the Holy Spirit gives Us divine power both to Will and to do of God’s good pleasure Philippians 2:13. The Holy Spirit that dwells in us and quickens our mortal bodies, giving us life Romans 8:11. For this reason, we owe no allegiance to the flesh to follow nor give in to its dictates, lusts or desires. Our allegiance is now to the Holy Spirit, who is our life. We must give ourselves to obey His instructions, nudges, and desires. This is life in the Spirit Romans 8:13; Gal 5:16. Life in the Spirit is a life of letting the Holy Spirit lead in everything. This requires total surrender and obedience to His authority and leadership as God’s true children Romans 8:14. If we live our life by the Spirit, we should also be ready to conduct the affairs of our life in step with Him Galatians 5:25.

By God’s indwelling Spirit we can walk with Him Ezekiel 36:27. Sages of old like Noah, Abraham and Enoch walked with God as they were enabled by the Holy Spirit who came upon them. Since
Pentecost, New Testament Saints have become empowered by the same Holy Spirit who lives in them. Anyone who is still living according to his old fleshly desires cannot walk with God because the flesh will not submit to the will of God Romans 8:7-8; two can’t walk together except they agree Amos 3:3. Life in the Spirit brings us into agreement with God - thinking like Him, acting like Him, and speaking like Him - and therefore into unbroken fellowship with Him.

    CONCLUSION

Walking in the Spirit is the life to which we have been called. It is the Will of God for every human being. Those who say that they are in Christ must “walk”, that is, live and conduct their lives on earth as He did 1 John 2:6, in total dependence on and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
