Sunday School Lesson 29 – SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

Sunday School Lesson 29

SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

MEMORY VERSE: “Let all things be done decently and in order”. — 1Corinthians 14:40 (NKJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: TITUS 3:1-2

INTRODUCTION: Etiquette is the customary code (specific rules) of polite behaviour within a culture, society or professional group. It makes one behave in a socially responsible way distinct from animals. Etiquette is applicable to various fields of life: social, professional, business, spiritual, etc. When someone knows and follows respected rules for behaviour, we say that person has good etiquette or manners. The Bible equally advises us as believers to apply decency and orderliness in whatever we do (1Corinthians 14:40). Hence, it is necessary for youths to be guided in their dealings and interactions with others.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. THE NEED FOR ETIQUETTE
2. SOME SOCIAL ETIQUETTES

  1. THE NEED FOR ETIQUETTE
People around us must not feel embarrassed by our behaviour. One should not behave irrationally or illogically in public. Without etiquette, members of society would show far too much impatience and disrespect for one another (1Peter 3:8). Etiquette makes you a cultured individual who leaves his mark wherever he goes. It teaches you the way to eat, talk, walk and most importantly behave in the society (Proverbs 23:1-2; Colossians 4:5-6; Titus 3:2). It is essential for an everlasting first impression (Philippians 4:5a). The way you interact with your superiors, parents, fellow workers, friends speak a lot about your personality and up-bringing (Proverbs 18:24). Etiquette enables the individuals to earn respect and appreciation in the society (Luke 6:31). It inculcate a feeling of trust and loyalty in the individuals. One becomes more responsible and mature. Etiquette helps individuals to value relationship (Proverbs 25:17). It is a way to remove social barriers and created connection with people who needs to hear the gospel. (1Corinthians 9:22; 10:31; 1Peter 3:15).

2. SOME SOCIAL ETIQUETTES

1. When invited to a social gathering, do not be in a haste to take the front seat until your host brings you up (Proverbs 25:6-7; Luke 14:7-11).
2. Do not call someone more than twice continuously on phone. If they do not pick up your call, presume they have something important to attend to.
3. Return money that you have borrowed even before the other person remembers asking for it. It shows your integrity and character. Same goes with umbrella, pen, etc. (psalm 37:21).
4. Always be modest. Be careful not to order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is giving you lunch/dinner. Do not use the opportunity to take undue advantage of your host. Also avoid taking friend along except on request (Proverbs 23:1-2).
5. If you take a taxi with a friend and he/she pays, try paying next time (Heb. 10:24).
6. Never comment negatively on someone’s weight in the public (Psalm 139:14).
7. For ladies, avoid sitting carelessly. It is advisable to cross your legs at the ankle. For men, all you have to do is be a gentleman. Rudeness is never manly (Titus 3:2).
8. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, do not swipe left or right, you never know what is next.
9. If a colleague tells you they have a doctor’s appointment, do not ask what for, just say ‘hope you’re okey?’ Do not put them in uncomfortable position of having to say what they do not want to say.
10. Do not be ‘a busy body’ in other people’s matter (1Peter 4:15; 1Thessalonians 4:11; 1Thimothy 5:13).
In addition, youtys should note that rushing for food or chairs in a large gathering, jumping queue in pupil places, flagrant disregard for decorum, driving against traffic or breaking traffic laws, littering the environment with waste, reckless slangs (‘shit’, ‘fuck’, etc.), lack of table manners and improper dressing of any kind should be avoided (2Corinthians 3:2; Debt. 22:5; 1Corinthians 10:31; Philippians 3: 16-18).
Lack of social etiquette could lead to insults, dishonesty, cheating, road rage, fist fight and many other unfortunate incidents.

CONCLUSION

Etiquette is more than fussy rules laid down by stuffy people. It is the oil that lubricates society and reduces the friction of interpersonal relationship. Bad manners and poor etiquette are distractions to the message we bear as Christians.

QUESTIONS
1. Why is etiquette necessary in our society?
2. List some social etiquettes youths should adhere to.

Sunday School Lesson 28 – LIFE SKILLS: SELF-DEVELOPMENT

Sunday School Lesson 28

LIFE SKILLS: SELF-DEVELOPMENT

MEMORY VERSE:  “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings ; He will not stand before unknown men”. — Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1TIMOTHY 4:11-16.

INTRODUCTION: Everyone of us would like to live out life to the fullest, and make the most of who we are and what we do. This is one of the main factors that encourages individuals to seek the path of self-development. Self-development is a process of consciously improving yourself in various aspects of your life. It is the conscious pursuit of personal growth by improving personal skills, competencies, talents and knowledge in order to seek self fulfilment and proactively reach your fullness potential (Proverbs 1:5)

LESSON OUTLINES
1. WHY SELF-DEVELOPMENT?
2. HOW TO DEVELOP YOURSELF

1. WHY SELF-DEVELOPMENT?
Self-development could be for professional advancement, personal advancement or spiritual enhancement (Daniel 9:2). Whatever your goals may be, it is a continuous process that helps you being in significant changes in your life. Here are some of the reasons youths should develop themselves.
1. For self-awareness. Youths can attend Self-development or life coaching classes to get to know themselves better. Knowing who you are gives you clarity on the purpose of your life (Proverbs 20:5).
2. To achieve maximum potential. Developing yourself involves improving the existing skills and learning the new ones to become a better person and achieve more than you can physically, mentally and spiritually (Proverbs 24:14; 1Thimothy 4:14-15).
3. To improve performance. Developing your abilities and qualities will help you to perform better intellectually, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, to achieve your goals in life (2Thimothy 2:15).
4. To improve social skills that allow them to lead a confident life (Proverbs 18:24).
Self-development is an ongoing process of self development in your career, education, personal life, spiritual growth and other areas of life

2.HOW TO DEVELOP YOURSELF

1. Seek knowledge on what you want to improve on. Source for information related to what you need improvement on, e.g. audio and video materials, books etc (Eccl1:13).
2. Have a mentor/role model. It is helpful to be able to look to others for inspiration, motivation, or even just daily reminders of how you can continue moving forward on your journey (1King 19:19-21; 1Thimothy 1:1-2; 4:12-16).
3. Surround yourself with people of like minds. Spend time with people who are working on similar things as you, and you will find yourself growing with them at a faster rate than if you had tried to do it all alone (1Samuel 22:1-2; Proverbs 27:17).
4. Maintain self-discipline, stay honest with yourself and be intentional about your desired improvement (Proverbs 25:28; 2Corinthians 4:17).
5. Measure your progress. Reflect at the end of each day as it is a way to really know I’d you are moving in the right direction and when or where to pivot as you go along
6. Consistency is the key. Self-development happens slowly and deliberately. It should be a daily practise and lifestyle. Consistency is what creates a meaningful change (Daniel 6:10; 2Peterb1:10).
7. Embrace change. Your self-development plan needs to include how you are doing to change and what action you will take. Only action lead to results.
8. Be grateful and recognise your worth. Focus on what you already have. Think about how others benefit from what to do. If you improve yourself, those benefit will increase. Your personal development is for others, as well as for you (Psalm 100:4).
9. Follow your passion and pray along. It is not good doing things that you do not like. Choose actions that appeal to you and are in line with your values and pray as you work on them (Proverbs 3:5-6; 1Timothy 4:16).
10. Pray and follow the prompting of the holy spirit to be the best that God created you to be (Jeremiah 29:11; Deuteronomy 28:8-13).

CONCLUSION: Self-development can be a long path depending on where you are at present and where you what to be in the future. So, the sooner you start, the better it is.

QUESTIONS:

1.Mention four (4) reasons for self-development.
2. Identify at least five way to develop yourself.

Sunday School Lesson 27 – LIFE SKILLS: GOAL SETTING

Sunday School Lesson 27

LIFE SKILLS: GOAL SETTING

MEMORY VERSE:  “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty”. — Proverbs 21:5 (NKJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 41:33-38

INTRODUCTION: Many people go through the journey of life aimlessly without a roadmap to help them navigate life (1Corinthians 9:26). Some others think that goal-setting is unspiritual because they believe that “people should wait for God to lead them. It is true that God neither wants us to forge ahead in pride without consulting Him for direction (James 4:13-15) nor does He want us to sit around without acting (Genesis 11:3). Consulting with God and setting goals show that you trust Him and believe that He is able to lead you while you are moving forward (Proverbs 16:9; Psalm 20:4).

LESSON OUTLINES

1. PRINCIPLES AND AREAS OF GOAL SETTING
2. STEPS AND ADVANTAGES TO GOAL SETTING

1. PRINCIPLES AND AREAS OF GOAL SETTING

A goal is a desirable outcome that someone carefully decides on, commits to, and plans to attain while, goal-setting is the process of deciding what you want to accomplish and devising a plan to achieve those desired results.

A useful way of actualising goals is to adopt the SMART acronym. While there are plenty of variants, SMART usually stands for:
S – Specific (Habakkuk 2:2-3).
M- Measurable (Luke 14:28).
A – Attainable (Proverbs 16:3).
R – Realistic (Proverbs 21:5).
•T – Time-bound (Ecclesiastes 3:17b).

Hence, your goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic and
time-bound as these aid the actualisation (Luke 14:28-30).

Areas where we can set goals include:

1. Career: Decide what level you want to reach in your career or what you want to achieve. (Proverbs 11:23; 23:18).

2. Financial: Set a goal on how much you want to earn. (Proverbs 21:5).

3. Education: Set academic goals in line with your career (Proverbs 2:3)

4. Family: What kind of relationship/partner do you want? What number of children do you want? How do you want to be seen by a partner or in-laws to be? (Proverbs 18:24; 2Corinthians 6:14).

5. Attitude: Do you have character defects or anything in your mindset holding you back? If so, set a goal to improve your behaviour or find a solution to the problem. (Matthew. 7:17-20).

6. Physical: Are there any physical fitness goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this? (1Timothy 4:8a)

7. Pleasure: How do you want to enjoy yourself after you have worked? What plans do you have for vacation? You should ensure that some of your life is for you (Ecclesiastes 5:18).

8. Public Service: Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how? (Matthew 5:14)

2. STEPS AND ADVANTAGES TO GOAL SETTING

The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future (Proverbs 16:9). As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are the ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not the ones that your parents, family, or employers might want (Proverbs 16:3). If you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants. However, make sure that you also remain true to yourself (Mark 12:31). Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a periodic plan. For example, a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan, and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals (Psalm 37:23). Each of these should be based on the previous plan. Then create a daily ‘to-do list’ of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals (Ecclesiastes 3:1). At an early stage, your smaller goals might be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your higher level goals. This will help you to improve the quality and the realism of your goal setting.

Finally, review your plans, commit them into God’s hand and make sure that they fit into God’s purpose and will for your life (Proverbs 3:5-6; 19:21).

A guiding example of personal goals could appear in this form:

Christianah has decided to think about what she really wants to do with her life. Her lifetime goals are as follows:

1. Career – “To be Managing Editor of the magazine that I work for.”

2. Artistic – “To keep working on my illustration skills. Ultimately, I want to have my own show in our downtown gallery.”

3. Physical -“To run a marathon.”

Now that Christianah has listed her lifetime goals, she then breaks down each one into smaller and more manageable goals.

Let us take a closer look at how she might break down her lifetime career goal:-

becoming Managing Editor of her magazine:

1. Five-year goal: “Become Deputy Editor.”
2. One-year goal: “Volunteer for projects that the current Managing Editors heading up.
3. Six-month goal: Get professionally certified.
4. One-month goal: “Talk to the current Managing Editor to determine what skills are needed to do the job.”
5. One-week goal: “Book the meeting with the Managing Editor.”

As you can see from this example, breaking big goals down into smaller and more manageable goals makes it far easier to see how the goal will get accomplished.

CONCLUSION: In order to fulfill destiny, set meaningful and achievable goals. Avoid navigating aimlessly in the corridor of life.

QUESTIONS:

  1. In setting goals, what does the acronym ‘SMART’ represent?
    2. What are the crucial steps to be taking in setting goals?

Sunday School Lesson 25 – Spiritual Gifts: Identification And Usage

Sunday School Lesson 25

Spiritual Gifts: Identification And Usage

MEMORY VERSE: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” – 1 Peter 4:10

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 12:6-8 KJV

INTRODUCTION: It is definitely commendable for God’s children to desire to know the spiritual gifts given to them by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of service in the Church and glorify God in the world (2 Timothy 1:6). The existence of a gift is a call to exercise it. Therefore, Apostle Paul advised Timothy, “Neglect not the gift that is in you,” (1Timothy 4:14).

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Identifying Your Spiritual Giftedness
  2. Effective Use Of Spiritual Gifts

1. IDENTIFYING YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTEDNESS

Identifying your spiritual giftedness can be accomplished in various ways.
Effective fervent prayers is very vital because the One who knows exactly how you are spiritually gifted is the gift-giver Himself-the Holy Spirit. You can ask Him to show you how you are gifted in order to better use your spiritual gifts for His glory (Luke 11:9, 13). Confirmation from others also gives light to your spiritual giftedness. Other people who see you serving the Lord can often identify a spiritual gift in use that you might take for granted or not recognise (1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:5-6). In addition, you can carry out a self-test. There are questions you can ask yourself as pointers to your spiritual gift.

Questions like ‘what spiritual activity do l enjoy doing?”, “What ministry in my life is God blessing?”, “What is the Holy Spirit telling or prompting me to do? (Romans 12:5-8 ;1Corinthians 7:20,24).

2. EFFECTIVE USE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Every Christian is given at least a gift at conversion (Ephesians 4:7). As you manage well your initial gift and as your ministry expands, you may ask God for other gifts under the direction and promptings of the Holy Spirit
(1 Corinthians 12:31,14:39). Every gifted person has a proper function in the body of Christ (the church). No gift is superior to others but gifts differ in function (1 Corinthians 12:20-25). No one believer has all the gifts (1 Corinthians 12:28-30), so we need one another.

Spiritual gifts are given to edify (build up) other believers (1 Corinthians 14:12; 26: Ephesians 4:12); to promote growth, unity and love (Ephesians 4:16); to assist in the care of one another (1 Corinthians 12:25; 1 Peter 4:10); and to glorify God, especially in the ministry of the Word (1 Peter 4:11).

CONCLUSION: Faithful utilisation of a gift brings increased effectiveness in the ministry, but failure to develop a gift curtails ministry.

QUESTIONS:

  1. In what ways can believers identify their spiritual gifts?
  2. How can believers put their spiritual giftedness into effective usage?

Sunday School Lesson 24 – Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Sunday School Lesson 24

Understanding Spiritual Gifts

MEMORY VERSE: “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” – 1 Corinthians 12:1-7

BIBLE PASSAGE:1 Corinthians 12:1-7 KJV

INTRODUCTION: A spiritual gift is a special divine empowerment bestowed on a believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given ministry. The gift is to be used in God’s way according to His grace and discernment within the context of the Body of Christ and to help the church execute her mission on earth. The bible makes it clear that every genuine Christian is given spiritual gifts according to the Lord’s choice. Spiritual gifts can be given to us at salvation or/and cultivated through our walk with God..

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Lists Of Spiritual Gifts
  2. Talents And Spiritual Gifts Compared

1. LISTS OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Romans 12:3-8 lists the spiritual gifts as follows: prophecy, service (as deacon/deaconess), teaching, exhorting, generosity, leadership, and showing mercy. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 lists the gifts as the word of wisdom (ability to communicate spiritual wisdom), the word of knowledge (ability to communicate practical truth), faith (unusual reliance upon God), the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues (ability to speaking a language that one has not studied), and interpretation of tongues. The third list is found in Ephesians 4:10-12, which speaks of the ministry gifts of the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.

You can seek a spiritual gift from God and be zealous after it by seeking to develop that area (1 Corinthians 12:31). However, if it is not God’s will, you will not receive a certain spiritual gift no matter how strongly you seek after it. It is also possible that the biblical lists are not exhaustive, that there are additional spiritual gifts beyond the ones the Bible mentions as witnessed in the body of Christ today

2. TALENTS AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS COMPARED

There are similarities and differences between talents and spiritual gifts. Both are gifts from God. Both grow in effectiveness with use. Both are Intended to be used on behalf of others, not for selfish purposes (1 Corinthians 12:7)

Natural talents are often the vehicle through which spiritual gifts can be used.

On the other hand, natural talents are physical abilities to do special things, while spiritual gifts are spiritual abilities to do certain things. A person is given a natural talent as a result of a combination of genes: some have natural ability in music, art, mathematics, carpentry or mechanical aptitude and surroundings (Exodus 31:1-6). However, Spiritual gifts are given to all believers by the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:3, 5) at the time they place their faith in Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. A talent can be possessed by anyone (Christian or non-Christian), while spiritual gifts are only possessed by believers in Christ. The Holy Spirit gives to the believer the spiritual gifts He desires the believer to have (1 Corinthians 12:11). While one may develop his talents and later direct his profession or hobby along those lines for personal gains, spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit for the building up of Christ’s church generally (Ephesians 4:12). While both talents and spiritual gifts should be used for God’s glory and to minister to others (1 Peter 4:10), spiritual gifts are focused on these tasks, while talents can be used entirely for non-spiritual purposes.

CONCLUSION: God is infinitely wise, and He knows through which gifts you will be most productive for His kingdom.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention the various types of spiritual gifts known to you.
  2. What are the similarities and differences between spiritual gifts and talents?

FURTHER READING:
Monday: Romans 12:3-8 (KJV)

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Tuesday: 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (KJV)
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Wednesday: Ephesians 4:10-12 (KJV)

Thursday: Exodus 3:1-6 (KJV)

And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

Sunday School Lesson 23 – Spiritual Maturity

Sunday School Lesson 23

Spiritual Maturity

MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,” – Hebrews 6:1

BIBLE PASSAGE:Hebrews 5:12-14

INTRODUCTION: After salvation, every believer is expected to begin the process of spiritual growth. Just like a baby grows from living on ordinary milk to some light solid meal and eventually to cracking real bones at adulthood, a Christian must grow from just taking the milk of the word (1 Peter 2:2) to a spiritual bone-cracker (Hebrews 6:1). It is not correct to claim that the Spirit of God lives in you without any effect on your lifestyle. Spiritual maturity is achieved through becoming more like Jesus Christ.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Characteristics Of A Spiritual Christian
  2. Signs Of Spiritual Maturity

1. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN

A spiritual Christian lives as a son and not as a slave (Romans 8:14-16, Luke 8:21). He is led by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 18, Ephesians 5:2, 15) and bears the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, Psalm 92:13-14). He is mindful of spiritual things (Romans 8:5; Philippians 2:5). He is free from the law (Romans 8:2, John 8:32) and its condemnation (Romans 8:1, Luke 6:37). He has mortified the deeds of the flesh (Colossians 3:5-9, Galatians 5:20). He is divinely guided and has spiritual insight (1 Corinthians 2:10-13, 15).

2. SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Maturing believers possess some of these indicators: An appetite for ‘strong meat, i.e. love for deeper doctrines (Hebrews 5:12-14). Unyieldingness to personal offence, (Philippians 1:15-18). A conscience informed by Scripture, not opinions (Romans 14:1-3). A sense of humility when used by God in ministry (1 Timothy 3:6; 2 Corinthians 4:7). A tendency to give credit for spiritual growth to God, not people (1 Corinthians 3:4-7).

CONCLUSION: Becoming spiritual is Christ’s aim for the Church. We should all strive towards spiritual maturity, so as to be ready for the coming of Christ.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What are the characteristics of a Spiritual Christian?
  2. What are the signs of spiritual maturity?

FURTHER READING:

Monday: John 5:24 (KJV)
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Tuesday: Romans 8:2 (KJV)
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Wednesday: John 3:18 (KJV)
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Thursday: Romans 8:34 (KJV)
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Friday: Colossians 3:1-2 (KJV)
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Sunday: 1 John 2:6 (KJV)
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Sunday School Lesson 22 – The Holy Spirit

Sunday School Lesson 22

The Holy Spirit

MEMORY VERSE:  “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” – Acts 2:4

BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 2:1-4 KJV

INTRODUCTION: The day of the Pentecost marked the beginning of the dispensation of the Holy Ghost and will continue till Jesus comes to carry His own people away just before the great tribulation period. The coming of the Holy Ghost has been foretold by Jesus as the one coming to take charge of the activities of the church.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. The Holy Spirit And His Relevance

2. Fellowshipping With The Holy Spirit

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS RELEVANCE

The Holy Spirit is the third person in Trinity (1John 5:7), the person in charge of this dispensation and He is in total control of all situations (John 16:13-14). He is called another Comforter (John 14:26), an expert in comforting those that mourn and are sorrowful (John 14:26). He is the Spirit of Truth (John 15:26), possessing all secrets (2 Kings 6:8-10). He is the Testifier (Romans 8:16) and the Teacher (John 14:26), full of all knowledge, wisdom and understanding (John 14:26). He is the Power behind every activity of the church (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49). Power for holy living and exploit is with Him (Acts 1:8, Luke 10:19). Power to change and transform a person is also with Him. He is the revealer of the mind of God and the plan of the kingdom of darkness. (Romans 2:9-11). He convicts for genuine repentance (Ephesians 1:13-14). He is the Intercessor (Romans 8:26-27) and peace is available with Him (Mark11:23).

2. FELLOWSHIPPING WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit is about seeking to know, developing intimacy with and carrying the favour of this higher Authority. Without the Holy Spirit you cannot go far in the Christian journey. This indispensability was further established as He was the power behind our Lord Jesus Christ’s exploit all through His ministry on earth (Matthew 3:16; Acts 10:38).
For a believer, the fellowship with the Holy Spirit is not optional but mandatory, especially if such a believer will want to be relevant in the kingdom. In the place of fellowship, issues are tabled before God – the believer will be comforted, challenges will become stepping stone and ways will be made where there is no way (Acts 27:10). Fellowship can be sustained or lost with grave consequences (Psalm 51:11). Power to live a sanctified life and grace to pray through are also available in the place of fellowship with the Holy Spirit (2 Kings 6:8-10; Acts 10:9-16; Acts 16:25-39). To enjoy fellowship with the Holy Spirit, a believer must abstain from sin at all cost and make himself available in His presence (Ephesians 4:30).

CONCLUSION: Fellowship with the Holy Spirit for mutual benefits

QUESTIONS:

  1. In what ways is the Holy Spirit relevant in this dispensation?
  2. Why is the fellowship with the Holy Spirit compulsory for all believers?

Sunday School Lesson 21 – The God Chasers

Sunday School Lesson 21

The God Chasers

MEMORY VERSE:  “My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.” – Psalm 63:8

BIBLE PASSAGE:Psalms 63:1-8 KJV

INTRODUCTION: A God chaser is a person whose passion for God’s presence presses him to chase the impossible in the hope that the uncatchable might catch him. A child chases a loving parent until suddenly the strong arms of the father enfold the chaser (Gen. 5:24; Phil. 3:12).

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Examples Of God Chasers
  2. The God Chaser’s Map

1. EXAMPLES OF GOD CHASERS

The Bible records examples of those who diligently sought after God and were found of Him. They include: Enoch (Genesis 5:22, 24); Moses (Exodus 33:13-23); Jacob (Genesis 32:24-30); Ezra (Ezra 7:10); Daniel (Daniel 6:10-22); David (Psalm 63:1-8); and Paul (Philippians 3:7-14). They were not chasing after God because of what they wanted for themselves alone, but whole-heartedly believed God (John 6:65-69). They also acknowledged their emptiness and nothingness without God (John 15:5).

2. THE GOD CHASER’S MAP

A map gives a representation of a location needed for navigation. Anyone chasing after God must understand His spiritual location. While God is omnipresent, His manifest presence is only for those who diligent chase after Him. Hence among others, the Lord will be found in the place of praise (Psalm 100:3-4; 22:3). He will be found in the place of prayer and fasting (2 Chronicles 20:3; Ezra 8:21; Daniel 9:1-3). You will also find the Lord when you strive to live in holiness (2 Chronicles 34:3; Ezra 6.21; Hebrews 12:14). Ultimately, the Lord will be found in His Word (John 5:39; Ezra 7:10; Psalm 34:4).

CONCLUSION: We require the Lord to help us and be on our side when seeking the Lord. We cannot do it by human efforts. Let us call on the Lord today to help us.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention other examples of God chasers apart from those listed above.
  2. Where can one find God and be found of Him?

And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

Sunday: 1 Samuel 30:1- 6 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; 2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way. 3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives. 4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

Sunday School Lesson 20 – The Fear Of The Lord

Sunday School Lesson 20

The Fear Of The Lord

MEMORY VERSE: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7

BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalms 111:4-10 KJV

INTRODUCTION: The fear of the Lord is a reverential trust of God coupled with a hatred of evil. It is also an inward attitude of humble reverence toward God, in light of His self-revelation, that results in outward expression of Christ’s likeness. You cannot serve God or keep His commandments if His fear is not in you (Deut.6:13; Eccl.12:13; Prov.8:13). However, believers should not be scared of God but see the fear of God as respecting, obeying, submitting to His discipline and worshiping Him in awe.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Why Is It Necessary To Fear God?
  2. What Are The Benefits Of Having The Fear Of God?
  1. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO FEAR GOD?

We are commanded to fear God (Psalm 33:8) because of God’s holiness (Revelation 15:4); greatness (2 Kings 17:36); goodness (1 Samuel 12:24) and his forgiveness without which we would all have ended up in hell (Psalm 130:4).

The fear of the Lord is also necessary for worship (Psalm 5:7); in service (Heb. 12:28); to keep us from sin (Exodus 20:20); for administration of justice (2 Chronicles 19:6-9); for good governance (2 Samuel 23:3); for the perfecting of holiness in our Christian lives (2 Corinthians 7:1); because of coming judgements against which there is no appeal (Revelation 14:7).

2. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING THE FEAR OF GOD?

The fear of God brings pleasure to the Lord which in turn brings blessings to man (Psalm 147:11; 112:1). It gives deep knowledge and wisdom (Proverbs 1:7; Psalm 111:10). It is a unique weapon against sin (Proverbs 14:26)
It brings protection for believers and their loved ones (Proverbs 14:26). If you fear the Lord, His pity will increase upon you (Psalm 103:13). It makes a man acceptable to God (Acts 10:35). It brings down His mercy (Ps.103:17). It brings long life (Proverbs 10:27; 14:27). It brings answers to prayers (Ps.145:19). It brings separation from evil (Proverbs 16:6). It brings confidence (Proverbs 14.26). It guarantees true riches, honour and life (Proverbs 22:4).

CONCLUSION: Fear the Lord God Almighty.

  1. Why should you fear the Lord?
  2. What are some of the outcomes of fearing the Lord?

Sunday School Lesson 19 – Dealing With Fear

Sunday School Lesson 19

Dealing With Fear

MEMORY VERSE: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” – 1 John 4:18

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 41:10-14 KJV

INTRODUCTION: The Bible mentions two specific types of fear. First is the ‘fear of the Lord’ which is beneficial and is to be encouraged (Josh.24:14; Ps.111:10). It is a reverential awe of God, a reverence for His power and glory. It is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. The second type is harmful and is to be overcome (1 John.4:18). It is to be afraid of something or someone. The focus of this lesson is to learn how to deal with the detrimental type of fear.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. Basic Constituents Of Detrimental Fear
  2. Consequences Of Fear And How To Overcome

1. BASIC CONSTITUENTS OF DETRIMENTAL FEAR

Usually, the devil capitalises on our limited knowledge of the word of God and what the future holds for us (Jeremiah 29:10-11). The constituents of fear vary but usually include wild or negative imaginations (2 Kings 6:15 remembrance of a painful past event (Genesis 50:15-18); and a threat of harm (Genesis 20:9-11).

Fear is common among humans. The fear of; criticism (Matthew 26:69-73), losses (Job 3:25), old age (Psalm 71:9), ill-health/death (1 Kings 19:2-3), loneliness (Matthew 26:29), rejection (Genesis 32:3-8), failure/success (Proverbs 30:7-9) and defeat (1 Samuel 17:4, 10-11). The Bible also reveals the close associates of fear: discouragement (Deuteronomy 1:21; Joshua 1:9); Anxiety (Philippians 4:6); Worry (Matthew 6;25-34); Panic (Deuteronomy 20:3-4); etc

2. CONSEQUENCES OF FEAR AND HOW TO OVERCOME

When people live in constant fear, whether from physical danger in their environment or perceived threats, they can become incapacitated. Fear can cause emotional shock which is injurious to our health and can lead to death (Genesis 32:7; 1Samuel 4:13-18). Medically, fear can weaken our immune system and can also cause cardio-vascular damages. It can cause gastro-intestinal problems such as ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome and decreased fertility. It can lead to accelerated ageing and pre-mature death. Spiritually, fear stifles our thinking and actions (Matthew 25:25). It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation (Exodus 14:10-13). It puts its victims in perpetual bondage and torments (Romans 8:15;1John 4:18). Fear may lead to failure, pain and destruction of destiny (Genesis 36-10, Numbers 14:14). Fear creates doubt, blocks blessings and hinders prayer (James 1:6-8)

To overcome harmful fear, you must be sure of your salvation and stand firm in the faith (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:1). Put your trust in the Lord and rely on the leading of the Holy Spirit always (Psalm 1251-3; Proverbs 3:5-4). You need to confront your fears and refuse to be intimidated by the enemy, unfavourable situations or negative circumstances. (Psalm 27:1, 3; 56:11). Above all, constantly apply the word of God, engage in spiritual exercises and visualise the way out and solution through the lens of the word of God (John 5:39; Colossians 3:16). Finally strive to resist fear and break its hold over your heart (James 4:7; Revelations 12:11).

CONCLUSION: Fear cannot solve or improve but complicate situation. Reject every seed of fear and receive the spirit of courage and boldness (Proverbs 28:1)

QUESTIONS

  1. What is the scope of detrimental fear?
  2. What are the consequences of fear and the way out?
