RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 1 – FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS

MEMORY VERSE: ‘And he said unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men’. Matthew 4:19

BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 14:25-33

INTRODUCTION

Becoming a disciple of Jesus involves a divine process which demands an “Ultimate Commitment” to follow Him in total obedience to the Holy Spirit daily.”And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me “Luke 9:23. God is only committed to those who are committed to following Him at all costs, in total compliance with the principles Jesus taught. It is a journey to grow unto the fullness of His Person Colossians 2:9-10, Ephesians 4:13.

OUTLINES

  1. VOLUNTARY DISCIPLESHIP
  2. SPIRITUAL MENTORSHIP
  3. OBEDIENCE IN DISCIPLESHIP

  1. VOLUNTARY DISCIPLESHIP

It is God’s holy desire to make us become like Him and He has put in place the instrument of discipleship to achieve this, Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 9:23. However, God will not override our will or force any one to come to Him. Jesus knew no one could come to God except through Him, yet He did not threaten or force His Disciples to follow Him (…” IF any man will come after me, LET
him…”). It’s a very personal choice; no one must be cajoled, coerced, or forced into it. Pastors and leaders should only expose their church members/followers to every opportunity to become true disciples and grow in Christ. They should not force anyone into discipleship to Christ for their personal gains i.e of increasing membership/financial. To voluntarily “come after” Jesus involves;
i. Conviction backed up by response – Jesus did not commit Himself to the Disciples, but they chose to believe in His Name because they had conviction through His deeds John 2-23-25.
ii. Peculiarity in following Jesus – Peter in John 21:15-25
iii. Pace in following Jesus -Thomas in John 20:19-20 and 24-25
iv. It is a voluntary decision; it is NOT based on assumption – Ruth in Ruth 1:16-18 / Elisha in 1 Kings 19:19-21 / Matthew in Matthew 9:9 / Peter in Mark 10:28 / Luke 5:1-11
v. It is a conscious choice and non-coercive, so one can withdraw anytime – John 6:59-70.

2. SPIRITUAL MENTORSHIP

i. Spiritual mentors are mature believers in Christ that we can model our Christian life on even as they continue to follow Christ daily. They are helpers on our journey of following Jesus; they are to connect us to God directly to become like Jesus Galatians 4:1-2
ii. Provide guidance to the people John 1:19-37
iii. The disciples followed the examples of Jesus (as a man) and learned from Him directly – Matthew 4:18-23
iv. Submission to the spiritual mentors God provides to us aid the process of our growth in the character of Christ Galatians 4:1-2 / Luke 6:40
v. Paul and Silas mentored Timothy the young disciple. Acts 16:1-5
Romans 14:5-8 – It is especially important that we allow the Holy Spirit to fully persuade us that these mentors are from God as we follow them. ONLY true disciples of Jesus can make disciples for Jesus 2 Timothy 2:1-2.

3. OBEDIENCE IN DISCIPLESHIP

i. The focal point in following Jesus is learning to obey God daily in details as found in His Word, His Instructions, His examples, His Will, etc John 10:27-30.
ii. The Knowledge of Christ develops in us as we learn to obey Him in everything Matthew 28:16-20.
iii. Obedience helps us to respond to God’s grace in faith Romans 1:5.
iv. However, learning simple obedience to those in authority over us in Discipleship; forms a basis for our total obedience to God and in following Jesus Romans 13:1-2.

Those who truly love God are always ready to obey Him in all things. Our daily prayer must be “Lord, teach me from my heart to say Your Will be done (My God, My Father, While I Stray -Charlotte Elliott).

CONCLUSION

Following Jesus is an unconditional surrender to God in all areas. Believers are encouraged to pray, trust the Holy Spirit to lead them to follow the right mentors that will guide them in following Jesus the right way. Consistency and continuity in reading the word of God are key to following Jesus and being His disciples
indeed.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 51 – KEEPING LOVE ALIVE

MEMORY VERSE: “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.” Songs of Solomon 1:2.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Song of Solomon 1:13-17.

INTRODUCTION

Just as a romantic adventure begins when two people first ‘fall in love’, a successful marriage requires ‘keeping love alive’ by maintaining the excitement, passion, and commitment they had in the early days of their relationship. It is easy to get caught up in the daily routine of life, but
couples must prioritise their relationship and make intentional choices to keep the spark of undying love alive. This lesson will consider some of the things couples do to kill romance in their relationships as well as try to identify practical things couples could do to enrich their marriage relationship.

OUTLINES

  1. DON’T QUENCH THE FIRE OF LOVE!
  2. KEEPING THE SPARK ALIVE
  1. DON’T QUENCH THE FIRE OF LOVE!

Some ladies invest in themselves to be perfect when they are at the courting stage of the relationship, but immediately after the wedding, they fall into habits that harm their relationship with their spouse. Some of these include: attempting to change their husband into a clone of themselves ignoring the different personality traits Proverbs 14:1; Ephesians 5:21. Constantly nagging or criticising Proverbs 21:19; 27:15, drastically reducing opportunities for physical intimacy by not making it priority Song of Solomon 1:2; 1 Corinthians 7:5, not appreciating or taking their husband’s efforts for Romans 12:10b; Proverbs 21:19. No longer taking the time to look good attractive Proverbs 5:19, being unsupportive and disrespectful to their husbands proverbs 12:4.

After going through all things necessary to nurture a romantic relationship to the phase of marriage, some men also change drastically. Such men go from being the ‘loving, ever-supportive companion’ to an uncaring, insensitive dictator who neglects his spouse on purpose. They prioritise the making of money over spending quality time with their spouse Song of Solomon 5:6; 3:1. They tactically and practically leave every aspect of household chores to the wife alone. Some men even overlook the contributions their wives make in the upkeep of the home, preferring that they be seen and not heard 1 Timothy 5:8. They stop being romantic or using words of affirmation towards their spouse. Because of their ego, these men stop applying the love languages and refuse to apologise when they are wrong 1 Peter 3:7. Such attitudes kill off love in the marriage relationship, avoid them!

2. KEEPING THE SPARK ALIVE

Relationship is a two-way street; it requires give and take. Therefore, partners must work together to sustain the glow. Here are some ways to keep the flame of love aglow in your relationship:

  1. Communicate: Develop effective ways to communicate your feelings, needs, and thoughts to your partner. Be an active listener and use verbal, non-verbal, digital options to keep in touch Proverbs 15:23; 25:11-12.
  2. Initiate intimacy: Hugging, kissing, regular sex, holding hands, and sharing secrets no one else knows are key ingredients of Intimacy. These are essential for building trust and honesty in our relationships. Song of Solomon 1:2; Proverbs 5:19.
  3. Express gratitude: The expression of gratitude to one another regularly can make good times even better and help you through bad times Hebrews 10:24.
  4. ‘Having me time’: Maybe some ‘alone time’ away from your partner for a short while may reduce the tendency to be too familiar (‘see finish syndrome ‘) and rekindle the fire of love. Song of Solomon 3:1-4.
  5. Be adventurous: Go beyond the events of the day, take fun-filled trips, and build new experiences together like a new hobby e.g. cuisine, vacation, run a marathon, etc. Genesis 26:8; Song of Solomon 2:14.
  6. Seek to impress each other: Remember the things you did at the beginning of your love journey that endeared your spouse to you e.g. wear a scent or colour of clothing your spouse likes seeing on you Song of Solomon 4:10-11.
  7. Put your Phone down: Stay present whenever you are together.
  8. Have fun! Make laughing together your top priority Proverbs 17:22.
  9. Plan surprise dates Day -out and time away from home together is helpful, ensure you do not skip it. Try to change location for the sake of variety.
  10. Set annual family goals together: Work together on family projects, overcome challenges together, build a shared vision and prioritise the relationship Amos 3:3

CONCLUSION

Remember that change starts with you.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 50 – ADOPTING EFFECTIVE PARENTING STYLES

MEMORY VERSE: “ He that spares his rod hates his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” Proverbs 13:24.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Esther 2:7,10-11

INTRODUCTION

Having discussed the four major parenting styles namely the “permissive”, “uninvolved”,”authoritarian,” and “authoritative”, we shall proceed to consider the significant responsibility Christian parents have, in raising their children in a way that honours God and promotes spiritual growth, emotional well-being, and career success through the lens of the Scriptures.

OUTLINES

  1. THE BIBLICAL MODEL
  2. THE BEST PARENTING STYLE

1. THE BIBLICAL MODEL

Your parenting style simply refers to your method or approach to parenting your child. Every parent uses a method whether defined or not. The following questions will help us uncover scriptural models that reflect the mind of God on Parenting:

  1. Does the Bible have anything to say about different parenting styles? Yes, it does. The Bible gives several examples of very effective parenting methods, and some disastrous parenting methods Genesis 18:19; 1 Samuel 2:27-30
  2. Are there Scriptures that reveals how parenting can be more effective? Yes! Scriptures provides guidance for parents to follow by emphasising love, care and support Ephesians 6:4; 1 Timothy 5:8; Proverbs 31:15, 21, discipline Proverbs 23:13-14, correction Proverbs 19:18; 29:17, and spiritual instruction Deuteronomy 6:7; Proverbs 22:6. Knowing these biblical models is not enough to make the changes necessary. Obeying them is crucial in becoming the godly and effective parent.

2. THE BEST PARENTING STYLE

Parenting does not follow a “one size fits all” model. You do not have to stick to a single approach, as there will be times when a mix of methods is necessary. The most effective parents recognise when to adapt their style based on the circumstances. For instance, an authoritarian parent might choose to be more permissive when a child is unwell, offering extra warmth and easing some restrictions (e.g.,”Of course, you can have ice cream for lunch and dinner.”).

A permissive parent might adopt a stricter approach when a child’s safety is at risk, such as while crossing a busy street (e.g.,“You’re holding my hand whether you want to or not.”).

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, remember to use the parenting style that best suits your family’s needs at that moment and trust your judgement under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 49 – PARENTING STYLES

MEMORY VERSE: “And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.” Luke 15:12.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 2:22-25, 29.

INTRODUCTION

A parent is a person who is responsible for the care, upbringing, and wellbeing of a child. He/she can be biological, legal, or custodian. Some parents are firm, while others are indulgent. Some are attentive, while others are absent- minded. As a Christian parent, raising your children to please God and thrive in life is a big responsibility. Understanding various parenting styles through the degrees of “responsiveness” (the extent to which parents are warm and sensitive to their children) and “demandingness” (the extent of control parents put on their children) is crucial.

OUTLINES

  1. PERMISSIVE AND UNINVOLVED
  2. AUTHORITARIAN AND AUTHORITATIVE

“Responsiveness”

PERMISSIVE  _AUTHORITATIVE_ NEGLECTFUL_ AUTHORITARIAN

“Demandingness”

PERMISSIVE AND UNINVOLVED

The Permissive Parents are high in “responsiveness/love” but low in “demandingness/discipline”. They communicate openly and usually let their children decide for themselves, rather than giving direction 1 Samuel 2:22-24. Rules and expectations are either not set or rarely enforced 1 Samuel 3:13. They give in to their children’s demand to keep their children happy and avoid conflicts, even at their own expense Luke 15:12. These types of parents hardly rebuke or offer guidance to their children Proverbs 23:13-14. The development of delinquent behaviours and inability to make right decisions by some children are traits common under permissive parenting. However, it has the potential to unduly increase self-esteem and creativity in children negatively.

The Neglectful/Uninvolved Parents are low in “responsiveness/love” and low in “demandingness/discipline.” They usually let their children fend for themselves, perhaps because they are indifferent to their needs. They offer zero guidance, correction, and attention 1 Kings 1:5-6. They find it difficult to form close relationships because of past personal experience that has caused stress in parental relationship, etc. 1 Samuel 16:11-12; 2 Samuel 14:28. They can also be seen as cold and uncaring — but not always intentionally, as they are often struggling with their own issues. Children from parents who neglect them tend to be very self-dependent while also exhibiting some traits of truancy, emotional withdrawal, difficulty in social interaction, and fear of becoming dependent on others Proverbs 29:15.

AUTHORITARIAN AND AUTHORITATIVE

The Authoritarian Parents are high in “demandingness/discipline” but low in “responsiveness/love”. They enforce strict rules with little consideration of their children’s feelings or socio-emotional needs. To be in full control, authoritarian parents often talk to their children without wanting input or feedback. This rigid parenting style uses harsh discipline, it is often justified as “tough love” 1 Samuel 20:30. Low self-esteem, depression, aggression, poor social skills are common in children with authoritarian parents even though they may show signs of discipline and respect for authority.

The Authoritarian Parents are high in “responsiveness/love” and high in “demandingness/discipline”. They set clear rules and expectations for their children while practicing flexibility and understanding. They communicate frequently; they listen to and take into consideration their children’s thoughts, feelings and opinions Genesis 22:7-8. They allow natural consequences to occur, especially for wrong doings but use those opportunities to help their children reflect and learn. Authoritative parents are nurturing, supportive and often in tune with their children’s needs Ephesians 6:4. They guide their children through open and honest discussions to teach values and reasoning Proverbs 22:6. Children who have authoritative parents tend to be self-disciplined, socially competent and can think for themselves (e.g. Mordecai and Esther, Naomi and Ruth). While they are not totally immune to pressures around them, their chances of displaying negative traits common in children trained by authoritarian, permissive or uninvolved parents, is usually very low.

CONCLUSION

Understand that your parenting style will greatly affect your children’s lives.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 48 – CHRISTIANS AND INVESTMENT

MEMORY VERSE: “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise: but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Proverbs 21:20.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 41:33-37.

INTRODUCTION

An investment refers to the act of allocating money or resources to an asset, project, or venture with the expectation of generating
income or profit over time. It is simply the commitment of resources to achieve later benefits. Proverbs 21:20; Ecclesiastes 11:12. Practically, your investment can work for you while sleeping and at a time when you can no longer run up and down Ecclesiastes 11:4-6. A wise investment usually leads to wealth accumulation, income generation, diversification, economic growth, and good retirement benefits Matthew 25:14-30; 2
Corinthians 9:6. However, we need a thorough knowledge of investment opportunities and God’s leading to invest wisely in profitable ventures Ecclesiastes 10:10; Proverbs 21:5.

OUTLINES

  1. INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
  2. BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF WISE INVESTING
  1. INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Christians can invest in various ways that align with godly values and principles. Below are some examples of investments that can be both financially sound and ethically right:

  1. Stocks: Buying shares of a company gives you partial ownership. Investors earn through price appreciation and dividends. Christians can invest in companies with strong ethical practices and values that align with biblical principles.
  2. Real Estate: Purchasing property or building with the aim of earning rental income or selling it at a higher price.
  3. Bonds: Lending money to governments or corporations for a set period in exchange for periodic interest payments and the return of the principal amount of maturity.
  4. Mutual Funds: Pooling money with other investors to buy a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other assets.
  5. Commodities: Investing in physical goods like gold, oil, renewable energy projects (solar, wind, etc.), or agriculture (crop production, animal rearing, fishery, snail farming, honey production, etc), which can be traded or stored for future sale.
  6. Cryptocurrency: Purchasing digital or virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, where investors hope to benefit from price appreciation.
  7. Import and Export of goods and services. Charcoal business, wood, dry fish, animal skin, clothing material, etc. Acts 16:14.
  8. Businesses. Entrepreneurial ventures or partnerships: small or medium scale businesses like printing, fashion and design, confectionery, restaurant business, fuel station, transportation, raw- food business, etc Acts 16:14.
  9. Education: School business, writing and publishing of books.
  10. Retirement plans and insurance policies.

2.  BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF WISE INVESTING

  1. Divine guidance: It is important to start with God Genesis 26:1-5.Pray for direction and leading Psalms 23:2-3; Proverbs 3:5-6.
  2. Good Planning: Wise investing involves careful planning, research, and due diligence to ensure profitable outcomes Proverbs 21:5, 10:4-5; Genesis 41:34-36.
  3. Consistent steps of faith: Take necessary and calculated risk by faith and invest consistently. Do not allow discouragement Ecclesiastes 11:1-6.
  4. Honest and Ethical Investment: Christians should invest in ways that are honest and ethical, avoiding ventures that exploit or harm others Proverbs 13:11, 20:21,23; Luke 19:8-9.
  5. Kingdom-Focused Investments: Investing should not be for personal gain alone but also to further God’s kingdom and support others Matthew 6:19- 21.
  6. Knowledge: One of the golden rules of investment is that you should have some requisite knowledge of the investment intended Hosea 4:6 or get trusted people who are knowledgeable in those areas to manage it for you to avoid great loss Genesis 41:38-40; Isaiah 5:13.
  7. Funding: Money for investment can be from personal savings Proverbs 21:20, retirement benefits, or loans (banks or friends). However, do not take loans that could overwhelm and make you go bankrupt Luke 14:28-30.

CONCLUSION

Research and prayerfully select investments, considering both the financial returns and spiritual consequences.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 46 – GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS!

MEMORY VERSE: “There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers “ Daniel 5:11.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 5:13-16.

INTRODUCTION

Having learned last week about the correct perceptions about the engagement of Christians in politics, the dangers of not getting involved, and the urgent need for our participation, we will now explore strategies for engaging in political and community involvement.#

OUTLINES

  1. BIBLICAL MANDATE
  2. PRACTICAL STEPS FOR ENGAGEMENT
  1. BIBLICAL MANDATE

As Christians, we must no longer allow the secular society to dictate our roles or use us to fulfil their agenda Galatians 4:1, 7. Instead, we should actively project our relevance in the world, ensuring biblical values and principles guide our actions 2 Peter 1:5-10. Believers are called to be “salt and light” in all areas of life, including politics Matthew 5:13-16. All authority comes from God and one of our responsibilities as citizens is to obey authority Romans 13:1. We have a mandate to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God Micah 6:8.

2. PRACTICAL STEPS FOR ENGAGEMENT

  1. Pray for Guidance – Before diving into political engagement, seek the Lord in prayer for His Will and wisdom, Proverbs 3:5-6, James 1:5.
  2. Educate Yourself – Understanding the political landscape is crucial. Familiarize yourself with local, national, and global issues. Proverbs 18:15.
  3. Stay True to Biblical Values – As you engage in the political arena, you need to be steadfast with Biblical principles as the driver of your personal values and judgment even in the face of opposition or challenges from others around you, Daniel 6:4-11; Philippians 4:8.
  4. Register to Vote or/and be Voted for – One of the most fundamental ways to get involved is to exercise your right to vote. Participating in elections is a way of obeying the authority of the land and influencing decision-making. Ensure you are registered and informed about the candidates and issues on the ballot.
  5. Join a Political Party – Consider becoming a registered member of a political party that reflects your Christian values. Engage in discussions, attend meetings, and participate in party activities. This affiliation can amplify your voice and provide a platform for advocating policies that resonate with your beliefs.
  6. Actively engage in the politics within your Community – Start small by getting involved in local issues. Attend town hall meetings, engage with community leaders, and volunteer for local initiatives. Use your talents and time to contribute positively to your community, 1 Peter 4:10.
  7. Advocate for Justice – Advocate for policies that reflect God’s heart for justice. This could involve writing letters to representatives, being voice to the voiceless, participating in peaceful demonstrations, or joining advocacy groups that align with your values, Isaiah 1:17.
  8. Build Relationships – Politics is relational. Build connections with fellow believers and collaborate with others who share your vision for a just society, Proverbs 18:24: 27:17.
  9. Mentor other Believers – Inspire fellow Christians to engage in politics. Share your journey and walk them through the necessary processes of actualising their political aspirations, Hebrews 10:24.

CONCLUSION

Let us rise to the occasion, actively participating in the political sphere while remaining steadfast in our faith.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 45 – CHRISTIAN AND POLITICS: CHANGING THE NARRATIVES

MEMORY VERSE: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Proverbs 29:2.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ecclesiastes 10:5-7.

INTRODUCTION

The role of Christians in politics has long been debated. Many believe that a Christian should not engage in political matters, often concluding that involvement could jeopardise their spiritual journey. In this lesson, we will explore the wrong perceptions about Christians engaging in politics, put in focus the correct perspective, and emphasise the importance of Christian’s involvement. Our goal is to encourage Christians to be both heavenly focused and earthly relevant.

OUTLINES

  1. CORRECTING THE WRONG PERCEPTIONS
  2. POLITICAL LEADERS IN THE BIBLE
  1. CORRECTING THE WRONG PERCEPTIONS

Some of the common negative views about politics that discourage many believers from being involved include:

  1. Politics is dirty and corrupt. It is often said that politics is inherently dirty, leading many to believe that anyone involved cannot be pure.

Right Perspective: This notion is far from the truth; Politics itself is not inherently dirty; it usually reflects the character of its participants Titus 1:15.

2. Politics is not meant for Christians.

Right Perspective: This belief is another fallacy and contradicts the biblical mandate found in Proverbs 29:2, which affirm the importance of the involvement of ‘the righteous’ in governance. Allowing ‘the wicked’ to lead the righteous is both a potential error and danger, Ecclesiastes 10:5-7; Revelation 5:10.

3. Only dishonest people engage in politics.

Right Perspective: This misconception highlights the urgent need for Christians’ participation. We cannot afford to leave politics and leadership in the hands of those who do not fear God, Proverbs 1:29; 8:13; 16:17. It is unrealistic to expect righteousness from the unrighteous, Matthew 7:16-18.

4. Politicians are inherently untrustworthy.

Right Perspective: Believing that all politicians are untrustworthy is a costly assumption. This mindset contributes to our own irrelevance in shaping the affairs and conduct of our nation. As Christians, we must challenge this perception by actively engaging in the political process. Christians should set agenda for the society, as instructed in Matthew 5:14-16.

2. POLITICAL LEADERS IN THE BIBLE

The following biblical characters exemplify the integration of spiritual and political leadership, showcasing how faith and governance can work together for the benefit of their communities:

  1. Moses – A prophet, leader, and lawgiver. He led the Israelites out of Egypt and received the Ten Commandments from God, Exodus 3:10 12; Exodus 20:1-17.
  2. David – A shepherd, warrior, and the second king of Israel. He was known for his leadership, military prowess, and deep relationship with God 1 Samuel 16:11-13; 2 Samuel 5:1-5.
  3. Deborah – A Judge, prophetess, and leader of Israel. She exemplified boldness and courage at a tumultuous time in Israel, Judges 4:4-15.
  4. Nehemiah – The cupbearer to the king of Persia who later became a governor. He led the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls, demonstrating strong leadership and faith Nehemiah 1:1-4; 2:17-18; 5:14.
  5. Esther -A Jewish queen of Persia who showed great courage in advocating for her people, demonstrating both political influence and spiritual leadership Esther 4:14; Esther 5:1-2.
  6. Daniel -A high-ranking official in the Babylonian and Persian empires, known for his unwavering faith in God and his ability to interpret dreams Daniel 2:48-49; Daniel 6:10.
  7. Joseph -A Hebrew boy who rose to power in Egypt and served as a vizier-prime minister/deputy to the king. He interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and saved nations from famine Genesis 41:46-57; Genesis 45:7-8.

CONCLUSION

Engaging in politics is not just a duty; it is a vital aspect of our witness and influence as followers of Christ.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 44 – FAITH AND THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

MEMORY VERSE: “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.” 2 Samuel 23:3.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 10:17-23.

INTRODUCTION

The word Democracy, is a derivative from the Greek word “demos” (people) and “kratos” (power), meaning the rule or power of the people. It emphasises the participation of individuals in decision-making processes, ensuring that the majority’s voice is heard while protecting the rights of the minority 1 Samuel 10:19-20, 25-27. Although the Bible does overtly advocate for it but presents principles that align with the values of a successful democratic society, Deuteronomy 1:13. This lesson seeks to acquaint the church with the principles of democracy and highlight citizens’ civic responsibility through the lens of biblical values.

OUTLINES

  1. BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY
  2. CITIZENS’ CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY
  1. BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY

Democracy is embedded in justice and fairness, ensuring that laws are applied equally to all citizens, without favouritism or discrimination Mark 12:17. The Bible calls for justice, a principle that should guide the establishment of laws and governance in any society Jeremiah 22:3 Democracy would thrive When all individuals are treated equally and have their voices heard Leviticus 19:15. The Bible affirms the inherent worth and equality of every person Galatians 3:28. People participate in the decision-making process either directly or through elected representatives Acts 1:20-26; 6:1-5. The Bible acknowledges the importance of counsel and collective decision-making Exodus 18:19-22; Proverbs 11:14. The rule of law is a cornerstone of democracy, ensuring that everyone, including leaders, is subject to the law Matthew 17:24-27. The Bible emphasises the need for just laws and fair judges, emphasising the importance of legal structures that protect the rights of all Deuteronomy 16:18-20; Matthew 23:23. The Bible recognises the roles of various leaders and the balance of power among governance, religious authority and judicial functionaries Acts 25:1-4. Leaders in democracy should be accountable to the people who elected them and must act in their interest 1 Corinthians 4:1-2. The Bible encourages accountability, reminding leaders that they are servants of God and the people, and must govern justly and righteously Luke 12:48.

2. CITIZENS’ CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY

Every citizen in a democratic society has a crucial role to play either as individuals or a group. For instance, individuals should be well informed about their rights, governance and political happenings in the society to help them make meaningful contributions Acts 22:25-29. It is the right and duty of individuals to vote and be voted for, probe government policies and hold leaders accountable through peaceful protest, letter writing, etc Proverbs 31:8-9. Individuals can engage in open dialogue and respectful debates on issues that affect the society. They can join political parties, attend town/community meetings to influence decision-making at their level.

Natural groups (e.g. youth forum, council of elders, women group), advocacy groups, labour unions, NGOs, etc should use their platforms to advocate for good governance, fair labour condition, fair policies, etc.

Leaders of ethnic/community groups, should use their position to sensitise their followers, avoid bribery, thuggery, political apathy, etc.

Religious leaders should always say the truth, be full of wisdom in addressing societal ills and should avoid making the power of God of no effect Romans 9:1; 1 Corinthians 15:10. The media should be objective in reporting activities in the society 1 John 1:1, 5; James 3:5.

CONCLUSION

If every citizen aligns with these principles and play their roles, it can guarantee a democratic society that serves the common good.

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 42 – EFFECTIVE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

MEMORY VERSE: “Then Isaac sowed in that land and received in the same year a hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.” Genesis 26:12.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 39:2-4.

INTRODUCTION

Resources in general are anything that is useful and adds value to life. This could be air, water, metals, minerals, animals, plants, humans, etc Genesis 1:29-30. God in His mercies has endowed every society with human and natural resources, which enables them to produce the goods and services needed for their survival and prosperity 1 King 5:6. Resources can be grouped into three: capital resources, natural resources, and human resources. Our focus in this lesson is on how to effectively manage the resources that surround us.

OUTLINES

  1. MANAGING CAPITAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES
  2. MANAGING PEOPLE

1. MANAGING CAPITAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES

God expects us to properly account for capital and natural resources in our care. Genesis 31:38-40. This shows a high level of responsibility in making sure that the resources are fully maximised. Resources are to be properly controlled and used Genesis 1:28-30. For instance, money as a capital resource must be spent wisely and multiplied through investment Luke 19:12-16. Abusing resources through any form of wastage is gross indiscipline and disservice to humanity Proverbs 21:20; Luke 15:11-14.
Effective resource management also comes along with a high level of integrity; irrespective of the number of resources in our care we must be honest about the way we dispense them 1 Samuel 12:3. It is expedient that we make every effort to be productive with the resources in our sphere of influence Genesis 30:29-30; Genesis 39:3. We also need to know that we are holding forth for any resource in our care; we shall all give account Matthew 25:19.

 2. MANAGING PEOPLE

Every creature of God is useful if properly discovered and engaged appropriately Judges 11:7-8; Ephesians 3:7-8. This principle is illustrated in the case of the four lepers regarded as outcasts, but whom God used to bring succour to the nation of Israel in the time of famine, 2 Kings 7:8-9. Like David, we must
harness the strength of the people society may regard as invalid and turn them from dross into silver 1 Samuel 22:1-2; 1 Chronicles 11:10-11. Bring out the best in everyone just as Jesus turned Peter into a bold evangelist Acts 2:14; Acts 4:13 Manage people well; Nehemiah did these with the people of Jerusalem and got
results Nehemiah 2:18; 4:17; 12-27.

Humans are created with varying talents; these gifts should be discovered and used to the optimum. When humans are inspired, they will delightfully work effectively Nehemiah 2:17-18. Discover people’s strengths and leverage them while you help them work on their weaknesses Acts 18:24-26.

CONCLUSION

Every resource must be seen as a gift that must be well managed to bless others.
